Help your colleagues
Please keep a running log of what you found confusing in this document and return it to me when finished. Your pain will be a colleague's gain. Thanks to Anne Sakai, Bob Newcomb, Lyle Wiedeman, Aisa Green, & Jiawei Chen, this installation is already less confusing than it once was. |
Installation of JMP is fairly simple and consists of the following steps, which are expanded below:
Obtain the JMP License file (JMP701_2009_MacOSX_SID.txt) if it was not distributed with this doc. Email nacs@uci.edu for the file and store it on your Desktop. The JMP program will ask you to find this file the first time it is started.
Connect to the JMP installation files over the network.
Run the installation program.
Unmount the mounted images and disconnect from the network.

Click on the Mac Desktop, enter the [Cmd+K] keystroke to bring up the Server connection panel.
Enter the following string as the connection information:
smb://128.200.84.73/software
You will have to enter a user name [software] and password [install] to complete the login.
If a browser window does not open, please make sure you've spelled the connection information correctly. If it still doesn't open, please contact NACS at x42222.
You should see a folder (among others) called JMP7. Open that folder and then MacOSX and you should see a file called [JMP_7_MacOSX_2007.iso] that has an icon resembling a hard disk. Double-click it to have OSX automatically mount it as a disk image and open the disk in a new window.
When the window opens, you will see 5 files. Double-click on the installer package [JMP-7-Installer.app] and after you authenticate as an administrator, follow the instructions to install the software, which installs a vast (>4000) number of small files (mainly images) on your hard disk.
The first time you start the application, it will request that you open the SID license (JMP701_2009_MacOSX_SID.txt). Once that is done, the software should open normally and work until the expiration date (14 Apr 2008).
Occasionally, JMP is upgraded. The upgrades are kept in the [Upgrades] folder in the same directory as the original distribution and are named and numbered so as to distinguish which versions are most recent. In many cases the original version has to be installed before the patch can be applied. This is the case with the 7.0.1 upgrade. You should not have to install anything except run the upgrade program. It will detect your current installation and upgrade it in place. The upgrade for MacOSX ends in .dmg and is a regular Macintosh Disk Image. Simply double click it to start the installation process.
When you have finished installing the software, unmount the disk image by dragging it to the trashcan. You can also delete the SID file ([JMP70_2008_Mac_SID.txt])
